Artist Way: Week Eleven

"Reexamine your God concept. Does your belief system limit or support your creative expansion? Are you open minded to altering your concept of God?"

So a little context: I was put in Sunday school as a kid, but because it interfered with my Dad Time (Sunday was and still is his only day off) and because of another reason I don't remember, I dropped out. After that, we really only went to church on holidays, and even that waned as time went on. To this day, I am not baptized, though my mom and grandmother really want me to be, mostly because we just never made the time.

For awhile, if anyone asked me how I defined myself, I would say I was Catholic. (Which led to this really confusing interlude where, during an argument about homosexuality with my mom, she said we "were not catholic" which blew my mind because... Grandma says we're catholic, and we went to St. Anthony Catholic Church, and the following Christmas my mom gifted me with two Catholic Bibles. So what is the truth? A year or so later I asked for clarification but her answer was even more confusing and contradictory- I'm getting off track)

The point is, I never really though that much about religion until I came to TLU. I started attending chapel, just to kill time, and found the service kinda fun. Then I had to take theology, which led to me actually reading the Bible. With a new sense of religious freedom, I just sorta recognize that my faith is more in line with that of classical deism than that of catholicism. The concept of a higher power isn't unlikely, and it doesn't have to interfere with (and may even explain) natural laws, but I have not reason to believe such a God is interventionist. Religion and life in general, to me, should be about loving and helping other people in any way I can, irrespective of God or the way of the world.

I think this supports my creative expansion because it means I don't have a very firm image of God or strong opinions about religion other than the above condition. I can explore several point of views and ways of worship with an open mind. And while I don't expect my views to change, I don't think it would be devastating or life-changing if it did.
